So excited to share this latest project with you! When this design began at spring break, we dreamed about all the possibilities. What would we love to do if the budget were no object and what can we do with the budget to get the biggest bang for our buck. Our Farmhouse Kitchen began to come alive!
The number one rule to any renovation for my clients and me is a realistic budget. We all see the photographs in the magazines and tear out the pages, but the reality of every project is a cost, stick to your budget. A good designer will help you do that, of course, the unexpected things that may happen you sometimes can’t plan for like pulling back sheet rock only to find electrical that was never grounded. That’s where a contingency comes in.
Make your wish list. Then run through your budget and mark out things that are out of range. Our wish list went something like this:
- Refinish wood floors in warmer tone
- Remove carpet, add wood in great room
- Rug in great room custom 15×13
Kitchen cabinets to ceiling 48 inch rangeReplace with 30 inch commercial
- Custom hood range
- Glass in cabinet doors
- White Cabinets
- Colorful Island
- New Granite
- Farmhouse sink
- New pendants and chandelier over table
- Paint kitchen
- New hardware on cabinets
- Replace carpet up stairs and bedrooms
When deciding to refinish hardwood and replace all the carpet in your home, you must make a conscious decision that it’s a messy process. One that requires everything moved out room by room. When we decided on a color for the new floor stain and carpet, the homeowner had the name of a contractor to refinish who would do the work over Spring Break while we were both out of town. Now, I must say the thought of a full floor renovation going on while I am out of town made me very anxious I had nightmares of getting the call to ruin both of our vacations! I’m a bit of a control-freak its part of the job!
But, I must say the process was seamless, and the contractors were meticulous. When I got home from Atlantis first thing I did was run over to see the work expecting for something to be broken or out of place only to find new floor beauty. Laughter…and a sigh of relief!
Now, one must anchor the new space with a new rug. Rug rules are all surrounding furniture must touch at least two legs on the rug.
This rug is Shaggy Kasbah custom 15×14
Not every kitchen renovation needs new cabinets. Look at your space and determine if it functions well this area has tons of cabinetry and counter space. The function was not an issue. Next check quality. If your cabinets are all wood, have good height, and door style you can live with, paint them, don’t replace.
We chose to paint these cabinets Sherwin Williams Alabaster white on the perimeter. There are hundreds of white hues for paint be sure to test your white; some whites have gray, blue, pink, yellow undertones.
This island needed a color pop, so we chose a photo frame the homeowner loved that was painted and had the color matched. It was the perfect mix of blue and gray to make us smile.
Our painter is a true artist when it comes to making cabinets look fresh from the factory.
When renovating a kitchen look at the what draws you in when you see a completed design details are what make a design, if your dream of a large island can’t be done due to space create another focal point with details.
For us, this kitchen had way too many hard lines and needed to some glass doors to break up the sea of cabinets.
Adding glass to cabinet doors changes the entire space. Decide what you will place inside like lovely china, glassware, beautiful pottery.
We chose to add glass doors to the front of the island as well to store cookbooks and give more texture.
We always planned for our apron front sink. When deciding on an apron front sink remember your cabinet either has to be customized for the sink or if installing new cabinets purchase apron front sink cabinet.
There are many options for Apron front sinks fireclay, steel, stone. We chose one single large basin, my personal favorite. If you entertain a lot, a single bowl is perfect for large pots and hiding all the dirty dishes.
CUSTOM RANGE HOOD
A beautiful custom hood makes a statement piece for any kitchen. The design was created to take the eye up and make the room feel the 10-foot ceilings.
We designed this hood to give the farmhouse aesthetic that is the client’s style. Be sure when creating a custom hood pay attention to venting, electrical, and the blower CFM designated required for your range.
This hood was the perfect piece to pull our design together stained in a gray just enough rub through to see the grain of this poplar wood. An excellent carpenter makes simple drawings into pure magic.
Designing the backsplash is always the hardest decision for every client! In our last kitchen remodel we installed cream glass tiles only to have them go up and come right back down before the mastic was dried!
Backsplashes are important decisions, and every kitchen needs a backsplash surround. Options are the endless counter material of granite, quartzite, or marble can continue up the wall, stone, ceramic, marble, herringbone possibilities are endless!
We chose a 4×12 Dolomite Marble with a dark gray grout.
For behind the stove, we took a mixed gray and Carrera Marble mosaic tile up to meet the hood and tie all three elements together in our Farmhouse Kitchen.
When designing your new kitchen consider your cabinet hardware, this one piece can change the entire appearance of your cabinets.
If painting, your cabinets have the painter fill in any existing holes and drill for new hardware of your choice.
The hardware possibilities are endless and don’t be afraid to mix your metals. The hardware doesn’t have to match the faucet’s or lights.
Illuminate your space with beauty, not just function. These Timpano Pendants from Currey and Company give style and function to our rustic chic Farmhouse Kitchen.
Your pendants should play with your design if the design is farmhouse chic then lighting is the place to interchange that design theme.
The light over the table is from Sea Gull Lighting Ravenwood Collection.
Keep in mind sight lines when installing new lighting. And, remember your measurements for proper hang heights.
Our second decision in the design process was this gorgeous stone! We all love a beautiful marble, but the function does not work for every household.
Quartzite is a natural stone that gives you the look of marble with the durability of granite.
We wanted a thick 6mm edge on the island to give substance and weight to this centerpiece.
Changing the radius of the stone gives this island a different view than the previous arc.
New appliances alone are a great budget-friendly way to upgrade a kitchen. Commercial appliances give a budget-friendly kitchen the illusion of high cost.
We chose a designer Viking Commercial 5 burner range to upgrade this cooking for the chef of the house. And the stove made a great birthday present for the client’s husband.
I hope you have enjoyed this Farmhouse Kitchen reveal and are inspired to fly with a renovation project of your own. Thank you for reading I’m truly humbled to be able to do what I love with passion and share it all with you. Now I may be able to dream it, but the real true work is with great contractors. Great design only becomes great with good trades. Thank you to each one of them who make my work beautiful.
Be who God created you to be and design what you love with passion. Never get stuck in the box of what others are doing, design for your home and lifestyle!
